Apigenin (also known as 4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone) is a substance of the flavonoid class present in chamomile tea and other dietary sources. It has potential anti-anxiety and sedative effects in humans, and is commonly used in traditional medicine for these purposes[1]. However, its efficacy as an anxiolytic has only been scientifically studied and confirmed in mice[2]. It is thought to produce its effects by enhancing the activity of the neurotransmitter GABA. Apart from chamomile tea, apigenin is found in many other food sources in smaller quantities[3].
