Dextrorphan (DXO) is an active metabolite of [[dextromethorphan]]. This means that DXM is metabolized in the body by o-demethylation through the CYP2D6 enzyme to form DXO. Both are active chemicals and contribute to the subjective effects experienced when active doses of DXM are consumed. The pharmacology of dextrorphan is similar to that of dextromethorphan (DXM).
